The relationship between lifestyle choices and stress among Filipino adolescents

연구배경 [Background] Stress-related problems associated with lifestyle are increasing among Filipino adolescents. Middle school and high school students have been identified as the most vulnerable stage in one’s life. They are in the transitional phase and a lot of changes occur in physical, mental and emotional including a shift in responsibility and role. These changes caused stress linked to increase incidence of chronic diseases and likely to have a high risk of engagement to negative behaviors. 연구목적 [Purpose] The aims of this study were to determine the relationship of perceived stress and lifestyle choice in Filipino adolescents. Other analysis was performed to further understand how perceived stress and lifestyle choice is related to sleep quality and health status of high school students. 연구방법 [Method] This study is questionnaire based, and subjects of the study included 504 middle school (N=286) and high school (N=218) students. Lifestyle factors were being assessed through series of questionnaires involving the frequency of physical and mental activities, alcohol intake, smoking, body mass index, family economic status as well as circadian rhythms and social regularity. Outcomes were stress, depression, anxiety and other negative behaviors that were being contributed from situational changes of adolescent’s life. 연구결과 [Result] The result showed that more than 54% of male subjects from both eighth and tenth graders had a higher perceived stress than female counterparts which likely develop negative behaviors such as substance use (e.g. smoking and drinking alcohol). Findings of the study highlight the needs to develop and to have a proper implementation of school-based healthy lifestyle programs and prevention measures among adolescents. [Conclusion] Stress and other factors such as development of negative behaviors can be attributed to lifestyle and the decision-making and behavior determines the individual’s quality of life. Educational programs on how to manage stress and suppress negative behaviors as well as health promoting activities improve adolescents’ health by empowering them to have a control over their lives linking to daily health-related lifestyle choices.
